partying with popo September 7, 2011

My dad’s birthday was yesterday, but we celebrated with him Labor Day weekend.  My kids were so excited to be driving to his house and have some time with him.  It was raining- ALOT and we debated whether to reschedule, but decided to go on and hang out.  Dad always has a “working” birthday party. He ends up grilling and doing all the work for his own day.  The burgers were great and we had a fun table full of family.

Dad and Marian brought out toys for the kids to play with.

One of the BEST games was pouring a little water on the entirely waterproof table cloth and watching the water divide into bubbles as they blew it around the table.

Cord found out that Popo has his own pair of “holey” jeans.  Cord wanted him to change into them right then, and Popo did.  Cord was so happy that he was laughing his deep laugh that he does when he is almost giddy.

Christmas of 1999 I gave my grandparents, parents and in-laws a handmade journal that asked all kinds of questions about their lives.  I asked them to keep it for the year and fill it in so that we could talk about it next Christmas and get to have their memories forever.  My dad had the one I had given to my grandmother and grandfather.  He had found it when they were cleaning out her house and moving her to an assisted living facility.  She started looking at and reading it during the party. She read for awhile and gave it back to me and said,”There are some really interesting things in there.” All of them were her words or her husband’s, but I think along the way she has forgotten some of the things they had written.  It was sweet to get to see her read her thoughts and to get to read about her late husband as well.  Inside the book was one of the latest photos that was made of my grandfather before he passed away.  She didn’t seem to remember seeing it before, but loved the picture.  You just don’t get many days with the people that you love, and days like Monday will always be special to me for the sweet time and the sweet memories that are made.

Besides, who wouldn’t want to spend the day with this guy?!! (by the way, dad, you should make this your profile picture on facebook 🙂 ) Happy Birthday Daddy! We love you!
